Orientation

1.

You find yourself sitting in an auditorium with an unknown number of fellow students. Some, like you, are confused as to how they got here. Others act like this is perfectly normal, clapping as the principal comes up to the podium.

"Welcome to a new year at Inugami Academy! As you can see, there have been some changes in staffing and presentation at the school. Hopefully, these can paint over the memories of our painful last year."

It's strange, but when you look at him, he doesn't seem to look the same way twice. It's difficult to get a good sense of his true appearance, but at the same time, you feel like whatever he really looks like, you don't want to truly know. Not when you realize you're not even sure what language it is he's speaking, but the words are making perfect sense to you, as if they're being projected directly into your mind.

"To those of you worried about transfer students causing problems this year, be assured that we are no longer accepting transfers. Inugami's new boarding program only accepts existing students. However, one of last year's transfer students has been invited to remain on a permanent basis. Please welcome Eiji Hino!"

A strange, purple-eyed boy appears on stage, nudged forward by a black shiba dog at his side. Unlike the principal and many of the other students, his appearance remains constant, and you know that if you see him again, you will recognize him. He says nothing and only bows before standing perfectly still, staring out at the audience, as if in a daze.

"Please treat young Hino as if he has always been here. He will be working with the student council to help ensure a productive schoolyear."

Well, this is certainly...weird. What does he mean there are no transfer students? You've never been here before, have you?

2.

The speech may be over, but the assembly isn't quite finished. Before you know it, a crowd of student council kids gathers around you. But they're offering baskets of candy! So it can't all be bad, right?

The candies are a mix of traditional Japanese sweets, including sakuramochi, and flower-shaped chocolates, along with some candies you recognize from your own home. The baskets offered are offered in different shapes: a cute fox's head, a mischievous raccoon, a crow, a bizarre monkey's head with tiger paws and snake tail sticking out of the back, or a simple pink cherry blossom.

As soon as you take one, the other baskets disappear, along with the students holding them. Eating one of your candies will result in one of five different reactions:

Fox: Those who accept the fox basket will find themselves transformed into small kitsune, with one to nine tails

Raccoon: The racooon baskets transform students into a tanuki

Crow: Those with a crow basket find themselves looking like humanoid crows themselves as tengu

Monkey: Those who were adventurous enough to pick that bizarre monkey basket now have to suffer with the consequence of being transformed into a nue

All transformed students can stand there and panic for a bit until they are ushered away by a taller member of their species to their respective dorm. A quick nap will set things right again, though, and students will find themselves wearing cute, hooded pajamas of their respective dorm mascot, with the basket of candy beside their bed, perfectly safe to eat.

3.

Ah, but I did say five different reactions, did I not? Those who accept the flower basket (or who just declined any sweets at all) are spared from the strange transformation and will be approached by Eiji himself. There is a smile on his face, but his vision still seems unfocused as he comes up to you.

"Welcome to student council! I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun."
